Many times in life we find ourselves thinking “I should have done this” or “if I could only go back and change that…” Well, the truth is we can’t go back. Now, as upsetting as this may be (the concept that we have to live with ALL of our actions), I have great news! This reality is not the end of the world.
When we get right down to the “nitty gritty” of life, there are just some things that are always going to be out of our control. It’s how we handle these day-to-day struggles that makes us who we are and, if handled well, keeps us from having those thoughts of regret.
When we are living with all of this regret, we are living in the past. A person should never totally disregard the past. The past is a wonderful teacher, and hindsight is always 20/20. Instead of dwelling on all of these mistakes and wishing things were different, we must “stand up,” accept them, learn from them, and work on fixing the results of them. How we respond to the past is very important and makes us who we will be in the future.
I am guilty of living in the past on many issues, but there comes a time in one’s life where we have to take responsibility for our own actions. No longer can we blame “mommy and daddy issues.” The bottom line is the world does not care that your childhood was wrecked. The earth will not slow down or wait for you to come to terms with this.
Fortunately, we have a God that will always be there for us, but we have to make the effort to meet Him, in my opinion, well more than half way. We may not always receive the answers we want, but as long as we are sincere we will receive what we need.
